THE ART OF THE ANCIENT RUSSIAN ARCHITECTURE, Saint Basil’s Cathedral

Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos

The Cathedral of the Intercession (officially named the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat) is one of the most recognizable architectural landmarks in Moscow and Russia, located on Red Square. It is popularly known as Saint Basil’s Cathedral.

Construction History

The cathedral was built between 1555 and 1561 to fulfill a vow made by Tsar Ivan the Terrible in honor of the victory over the Kazan Khanate. The concept of creating a multi-chapel church symbolizing the Heavenly Jerusalem originated with Metropolitan Macarius.

Architectural Features

The cathedral is a complex architectural ensemble comprising eleven churches (chapels) united by a common *podklet* (a non-residential basement level) and galleries.

•        The central church is consecrated in honor of the Feast of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos.

•        Eight churches surround the central sanctuary, forming a symmetrical composition shaped like an eight-pointed star. Four large churches are oriented toward the cardinal directions.

•        The domes feature unique patterns, shapes, and colors; originally helmet-shaped, they were replaced with ornate onion domes in the late 16th century.

•        The *podklet* is a massive base with thick walls (up to 3 meters) containing a labyrinth of small chambers.        shm.ru

•        Galleries connect all the churches; originally open, they were later enclosed with vaults.                                              shm.ru

•        The tent-roofed bell tower was built in the 17th century on the site of an earlier belfry.                                      znanierussia.ru

Interior and Artwork

The cathedral preserves unique frescoes, 17th-century tempera paintings, and oil paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries. Icons dating from the 16th to the 19th centuries can be seen here, including extremely rare examples of Russian icon painting. The reliquary containing the relics of Saint Basil the Blessed is of particular value. znanierussia.ru putevka.com nezabyvaemaya.moskva

Current Status

A historical-architectural museum has operated within the cathedral since 1923, and since 1928, it has been a branch of the State Historical Museum. In 1990, the cathedral was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Religious services have been held there again since 1991. um.mos.ru radiovera.ru
